At Yasukuni Jinja, more than 2,466,000 spirits of those who
died in wars since 19th century are enshrined.

This number includes not only soldiers but also samurai warriors
who died in the process of modernization as well as nurses and
female students who worked in hospitals on the battlefields.

In addition to them, at Gokoku Jinjya of each prefecture, the
spirits of those who died at their duties, such as the war dead,
Self-Defense Officials, policemen, and firefigters are enshrined.

'Yasukuni' means 'peaceful nation', and 'Gokoku' means 'defense
of the country' in Japanese.

As the names suggest, Yasukkuni Jinja and Gokoku Jinja were
established to wish for the peace of the country.

Father Bruno Bitter, S.J. and other Catholic priests appreciated
this idea, and they advised the Supreme Commander for the
Allied Powers to preserve Yasukuni Jinja after the World war II.

It is common for everyone in the world to have a place where
people show respect to the war dead and wish for the peace.
